Fortran 8x Explained
Mike Metcalf
John Reid

Second Edition
Oxford Science Publications

This a signficantly updated version of the Fortran 8x Explained book
published in 1987.

The standard has changed enough to warrent the new edition; the text
reflects the current draft, and each section has a summary which
explains the differences from fortran 77 and from the preceeding
draft.

This book provides an excellent overview of the language (including
some of the motivations for why things are as they are), detailed
examples and some exercises.

Despite my having no commerical interest in the book, I heartily
recommend it to anyone who wants to understand what the standard has
evolved to. It is orders of magnitude easier to understand than the
formal standards document.

(not that I am urging anyone to avoid reading that document nor am I
advising folks to mail formal comments on any "unapproved" texts) :>

Michael and John are to be commended for their timely update to a fine
text.
