[comp.lang.fortran] packed data types

hi, does anybody know how to set up packed characters or packed integers in
fortran.  I tried using a structure type format in the vax 5.0 fortran, but
i don't really know enough about it to do so.  Is there a function or routine
somebody has come up with.
