A little while ago I asked for some help identifying the military standard that covers bit manipulation, etc. It is: Fortran, DoD Supplement to American National Standard X3.9-1978, MIL-STD-1753, 9 November 1978 I am told that it covers the following things: END DO DO WHILE INCLUDE IMPLICIT READ and WRITE past EOF bit field logical and shift operations I haven't seen a copy yet. I tried to find this document at the local Federal Documents Repository to no avail -- I don't know if others are different, but I suspect not (a guess based on the indices we used, etc. to try to find it). You can order a copy from the National Standards Assoc., phone 800 638 8094, for $10.00. They have a $15.00 minimum order. You can also order from the Naval Publications and Forms Center. Phone 215 697 2667 to get a "customer number", then they'll direct you to the computerized touch-tone ordering system. I gather it takes something like 6-8 weeks to process an order. I just submitted my order, so we'll see how long it takes. There doesn't appear to be any cost for this document from this location. Also mentioned by some of the respondants were: FIPS-69-1, 24 December 1985 National Bureau of Standards Government Printing Office # 248D This *is* available in our Federal Documents Repository, in microfilm I think. It also should be available from: National Technical Information Service U.S. Dept. of Commerce 5285 Port Royal Road Springfield, VA 22161 My thanks to: Dan Whipple (pswhip@avelon.lerc.nasa.gov) ray@icdc.llnl.gov Keith Bierman (khb@sun.com) for their responses. -- David Bernholdt bernhold@qtp.ufl.edu Quantum Theory Project bernhold@ufpine.bitnet University of Florida Gainesville, FL 32611 904/392 6365
