[comp.lang.fortran] Looking for a good optimizing compiler for MS-DOS

dhinds@portia.Stanford.EDU (David Hinds) (02/20/90)

I'm looking for a good Fortran compiler for MS-DOS. It must be
reasonably compliant with standard Fortran/77. High quality code is
my key requirement; cost is a factor, but I am willing to pay more for
a good product. The ability to generate 80386 code would be a big
plus.

The best Fortran compiler for MS-DOS depends on what you are looking for. If
your codes are going to be fairly small such that they will run in 640K, the
Microsoft Fortran 4.0 compiler is what I would recommend. If you want to take
full advantage of the 386 and extended memory, the NDP Fortran compiler from
Microway is best. It gets quite expensive since you need to buy Pharlap tools
to run it under DOS. It will total about $1000 to get the compiler plus the
Pharlap tools. Microway usually advetises in PC or Byte. I have had pretty
good luck buying coprocessors from them.
