I forgot to include some historical references in my previous posting: The computer conference in Houston in 1982 had a Pioneer Day featuring the IBM group that first developed Fortran, marking the 25th anniversary of the delivery of the compiler. There are some articles in the proceedings. In the article "Fortran 77" edited by the (in)famous Walt Brainerd CACM, Oct 1978, there is a short historical intro written by Marty Greenfield, who was on ANSI X3J3 since the beginning of time. There was a conference on the history of programming languages at Los Alamos, sometime around 1977, I think, (most of my stuff is still in boxes) and Fortran was one of the featured languages. There were proceedings. Good hunting! -- Walt Brainerd Sun Microsystems, Inc. wsb@eng.sun.com MS MTV 5-40 Mountain View, CA 94043 415/336-5991
