One must take into account that the reviewer is a Kung-Fu movie fan. I've seen "Enter the Dragon" about eight times and wouldn't mind seeing it again. "Gymkata" is the worst Kung-Fu movie I have ever watched. I didn't even get the perverse pleasure of laughing at the dubbing. Kurt Russell sure can do gymnastics, he sure can't (pretend) to fight, though. The plot is simple (what else would you expect?): Kurt Russell is asked by the US Government to participate in a deadly obstacle course in a far-off (I forget the name..sounds like "Pakistan") country. The winner gets a single wish. The US wants Kurt to win so that they could put a Strategic Defense satellite base (as his "wish"). The action isn't. There isn't a tense spot in the whole film. The more I see films lacking Bruce Li's choreography, the more I realize what an artist he was. "Gymkata" has one (1) redeeming feature. The "girl" is quite charming. It is a pity that they only let her fight for about 2 minutes in the entire film. The black satin body suit was certainly pleasant. For Kung-Fu fans, this movie rates 1 out of 5 For Non Kung-Fu fans, this movie rates 0 out of 5 (i.e. you'll get more entertainment going to McD's and ordering Quarter Pounders without cheese) Miss it. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- What is your name? Exactly with just one small difference: it was KURT THOMAS, the (ex?)-gymnast, not Kurt Russell of Disney fame. He's right, though: the action isn't, and it was all too obvious that they did a VERY BAD job of editing the so-called action scenes. Not only can Kurt Thomas not fight, he can't act, either. Makes Arnold look like a really great actor. >"Gymkata" has one (1) redeeming feature. I thought the female lead in "The Last Dragon" was much better looking. >For Kung-Fu fans, this movie rates 1 out of 5 According to a friend who is a real big Kung-Fu enthusiast, this movie gets a 0 out of 5 rating. >For Non Kung-Fu fans, this movie rates 0 out of 5 (i.e. you'll get more entertainment going to McD's and ordering Quarter Pounders without cheese) Nah, as a non Kung-Fu fan, I'd rate this -5 out of 5(I'd consider it as the worst movie of the year, even Dune was better, and that's not saying much about "Gymkata"!!!!)

When I first saw the adverts for this flick I couldn't stop laughing! Oh well, what C A N an Olympic champion in gymnastics do after leaving amateur sports? First it was Kurt Thomas, nut Kurt Russel (the computer that wore tennis shoes). The movie is low budget, exploitive (coming after the 84 olympic's etc) and it wasn't campy enough, It was fun in the sense that testing one's wits againts a bad movie were mistakes come mile a minute (they reused some sequences from the first chase sequence inside the first chase sequence for example.) Having the shah played by an actor named 'Buck' was another. It wasn't bad enough to be good, but it did its best to be mediocre. -- ~~ Mike Upmalis (mupmalis@watarts)<University of Waterloo>
