Over here in Sunny Coventry people doing science subjects are taught basic Fortran in the 1st year. The class starts off learning BASIC , which is a very good way of starting Fortran. Most of the people on science courses aren't computer boffins, and just have the occasional coursework for computing to handle simple equations (Such as vibrations and waves analysis). As Basic is very easy to learn , and Fortran is very similar then most people seem to pick up Fortran fairly well , and for scientific jobs handle it okay , it's easy to read , there's no messy brackets and it's very logical. As fortran stands for Formula Translator , then I would say it's perfectly adeqaute for the scientist who doesnt care about whether or not he can use pointers and other tricky things C can handle ... I really dont think there's any need for anything to replace Fortran , it's been doing it's for years , and scientists must be fairly happy with it's capabilities and functions. I know for a fact that most of the people studying science here would probably faint at the sight of a C programme.
