Thanks to all those who replied to my post. The responses I got summed up like this :- 1) There are no bit manipulation functions defined in Fortran 77 2) There are some functions defined in a US military standard which most halfway decent complilers seem to have. These are IAND IOR IEOR INOT ISHFT BTEST IBSET IBCLR 3) This US-Mil standard is going to be incorporated into Fortran 90 Norman Beamish Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering University College, Dublin Belfield, Dublin 4 Ireland NBEAME91@irlearn.bitnet NBEAME91@irlearn.ucd.ie beamishd@ccvax.bitnet beamishd@ccvax.ucd.ie Voice +353-1-693244 Ext.1964 Fax +353-1-830921

Noting the traffic concerning intrinsic functions, I suggest that those interested refer to the ANSI spec for F77. You can also find the same intrinsic functions listed and defined in APPENDIX C of Software Design Using FORTRAN 77 By Robert Taylor Herbst Published by Prentice HALL ISBN 0-13-824681-5 Sorry about the commercial, but.
