Since multiple people have requested info about FORCHEK, and
the return address to several 'bounces', I have
prepared the following 'generic' information detailing how
to obtain FORCHEK, which, as I mentioned in my earlier post,
is similar to lint for Fortran:
1.) To find out more about what is available from netlib under the
various areas, just do the following:
mail netlib@research.att.com
send index
Note that the subject is send index, and there is no body to the
message. This will tell you all about the basic netlib 'wares'.
2.) Specifically, to learn more about the fortran related 'wares',
do the following:
mail netlib@research.att.com
send index from fortran
3.) To get FORCHEK, the following is all that is needed:
mail netlib@research.att.com
send forchek from fortran
4.) Usually, the response is fairly quick. In response to the "send
index from fortran" command, you will receive the following description
regarding FORCHEK:
From: netlibd@research.att.com
Subject: Subject: Re: Subject: send index from fortran

. (some arbitrary precision math software descriptions...)
.
forchek (short for Fortran checker) is designed to
detect certain errors in a Fortran program that a compiler
usually does not. Forchek is not primarily intended to
detect syntax errors. Its purpose is to assist the user in
finding semantic errors. Semantic errors are legal in the
Fortran language but are wasteful or may cause incorrect
operation. For example, variables which are never used may
indicate some omission in the program; uninitialized
variables contain garbage which may cause incorrect results
to be calculated; and variables which are not declared may
not have the intended type. Bob Moniot, MONIOT@FORDMULC.BITNET
If you figure out how to port this to MSDOS, please let me know :-)
Enjoy!
P.S. A quick check of the archie server at McGill also shows that
forchek is available from:
Host uokmax.ecn.uoknor.edu (129.15.20.2)

I do not know if this is the same version as is archived by netlib, since
I have not downloaded this file.
