Now that you mention it, this is a rather interesting point.  I believe it
was supposed to be a detector/neutralizer for burglar alarms.  The thing is,
the name on it was "The Sharper Image", which is a company which publishes a
catalog of neato-keeno gadgets and things.  I saw a copy of it when visiting
my folks several months ago (now what were they doing with it?  And why were
all those stereos, TVs and jewelry scattered all over the house? :-) ).  I
have no idea if such a gadget exists in real life...
