The New England Gay & Lesbian Film Festival: Week #2 Schedule =========================================== June 12/13 Wed/Thurs ANOTHER COUNTRY (British-Polish) 1:45 4:35 8:00 Rupert Everett stars as a thinly-disguised Guy Burgess at public school perfecting his seduction techniques. The "explanation" the film offers of the Burgess/Philby spy scandal or its origins is its least persuasive feature. But Everett's acting and the cinematography (won Best at Cannes) are top-notch. Or as the Orson Welles puts it: "Filled with slender young men in waistcoats sipping sherry; langorous athletes playing cricket; and the pairing of these gorgeous youths making love drifting in a punt down the Thames." PRIVATES ON PARADE (British) 2:55 6:15 9:45 A "black comedy" about British army entertainers in 1940 Malaya, the Song & Dance Brigade. John Cleese is "major twit" and Dennis Quilley, a civvie impresario who's a cross betwen Martha Ray & Hermione Gingold, whips the boys into shape. Quentin Crisp morosely panned this film (envy? regret?), but I thoroughly enjoyed it: it's delightful, despite the surreal ending. P ON P = M*A*S*H strained through LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, says the Welles. June 14/15 Fri/Sat BURGER QUEENS OF BERLIN (Rosa Von Praunheim, Germany) 1:15 4:35 8:00 A "musical comedy account of American expatriate transvestites living in Germany". Expatriate drag queens?! Starring Jayne County, Angie Stardust, Tara O'Hara, & Tron Von Hollywood. Boston premiere. TAXI ZUM KLO ("Taxi to the Toilet", Germany, Frank Ripploh) 2:55 6:15 9:45 The ultimate home movie, TAXI is the most sheerly exhilirating gay film yet made. Test the moral fibers of your straight friends: if they manage to screen it without putting their heads between their knees or fleeing the theater in homosexual panic, you'll know they've got CHARACTER. Seriously, it's highly recommended, but not for the prudish. June 16/17/18 SUN/MON/TUE ABUSE (US, Artie Bresson) 2:30 5:00 7:30 9:55 Made by the director of PASSING STRANGERS and GAY USA, a "moving story of a young boy who escapes a violent and abusive family to embrace his own sexuality in the arms of a male social worker, who has been assigned to his case. A highly controversial subject beautifully handled..." Enough to leave those alienated avatars of the Void, Anita Bryant & Andrea Dworkin, with their ears burning, I daresay! CHOOSING CHILDREN no times given "An emotionally powerful film that challenges our society's ideas about `family'", this multiple award-winning film "takes an intimate look at the issues faced by lesbians who decide to become parents. The six families in the film share -- with warmth and humor -- how they've found sperm donors, dealt with school officials, explained their situations to relatives, and much more." Week #3 Coming Soon!
