[net.movies] Rocky IV

evan@petfe.UUCP (Evan Marcus) (06/01/85)

Why do people bad-mouth the Rocky movies so much? I enjoyed all 3 of them
very much. If Mr. Stallone decides to give us another movie, what the Hell?
I really don't know too many people who disliked them, but Sly is a
convenient scapegoat for the sequel effect (Superman III meets Rocky IV
during Star Trek IV).

Could someone explain this to me? I have found them non-mind-taxing
diversions. Similar to the Star Wars series. What's the harm of another
one?

Well, no HARM, in that the people watching them will go froth at the mouth
and burn the theater down (gotta wait for another Friday the 13th movie for
that). I don't mind sequels -- I enjoyed THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, many of
the Bond Films and all the Trek films (to a varying degree). I don't even
mind non-mind-taxing diversions (some of my best friends are non-mind-taxing
diversions). It's just that I find the Rocky series (except for the first
one) boring, because the sequels have been almost exact re-treads of the
first movie, and from the ads, ROCKY IV seems to be no different. If I want
repeats during the summer, I'll watch Hill Street Blues. Not to mention,
the preview ads have been hysterically funny.

But, as always, this is just One Man's Opinion...

Give me a Break.

Why must every movie producer beat every good idea (and yes, Rocky was a
great Idea!) until it annoys people? Yes, folks. The same thing is
happening to ROCKY that happened to FRIDAY, THE 13th. I can see it now.

"Friday the 13th Part 13: Jason's back and this time he's doubly
    dangerous!"

I hate when that happens to original ideas.

the only problem with too many sequels is they run out of story lines,
don't get me wrong -- i liked the rocky movies, but how many times can
rocky come back in the end to win a fight. we've seen that story line
3 times. enough is enough. or maybe this time his kid will be old
enough to fight and then the next movie after that it could be his
grandson and so on,..........

I agree with the bad mouthing of Friday the 13th. But the important
difference is that #1 sucked! That series offers nothing terribly
different from lots of other movies out there already (The Slumber Camp
Massacre, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dynasty [(-:] ) In my opinion, Rocky
is quite different (redundant) from other movies. While I dislike boxing,
I enjoy the Rocky movies (tho not Stallone's other epics) because I find
them very exciting and invigorating.

The other thing that bothers me about all the bad-mouthing of his flicks
is that everybody goes and sees them and seems to enjoy them (everyone
is the theatres I go to screams and yells and applauds and all that), yet
they seem ashamed to admit they like them. It's easier to say it was crap.
Sort of like admitting you like "We Are the World." (I do.)

Nobody is trying to say that these are works of classic literature, but
they are entertaining, fun, exciting, and I would rather watch all 3 (4?)
Rocky flicks (in a row) than 1 of those Friday the 13th pieces of crap.
So sue me.

Keep those arguments coming in! Finally net.movies is interesting!

Uh, Rocky did not win the big fight at the end of the
original movie. Think hard -- his goal was to go the distance,
and he did. But he didn't win.

Incidentally, I liked the first two Rocky's (they were pretty different,
but kept up the story with Adrien, which I think was the real charm
to these pictures). That's why Rocky III really disappointed me.
But I'll still check out IV...

I think that there is an innate resentment of the success "formula".
Somehow it seems that it is not artistically acceptable to reuse
characters and techniques that everyone enjoys. It is just NOT legit to
keep making money without inventing something NEW :->!

It is interesting to me to consider this subject. I am primarily an
sf-lover of the written variety, although I certainly don't shun either
big or little screen. Thinking through some of the literary series I've
read, I'm amazed at the resentment that's evident toward movie series.
Some classics of sf are acclaimed, and more sequels are awaited. Yet
the mention of Rocky IV or STIV or another Bond makes for groans.

We are human, and part of that is the quality of jealousy. Why should
YOU make a fortune on a successful formula when I'm still plodding along
here?

My point is that people get a little tired of the same theme. Let see here:
Rocky is retired..
Rocky gets challenged..
Rocky says no..
Rocky changes his mind and comes back to kick the **** out of the russian
in a 15 round thriller as all of the US chears him on...

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!

Star Trek movies may be guilty to a degree too but there are enough ST fans
to argue differently.
