[net.movies] Male vs. Female singers of James Bond Movies

The following is actually from HUGH MAHER, U.C. BERKELEY, and NOT from
Robin Hoek, despite what the heading is going to say when I post this...

Speaking of singers of James Bond themes, KATE BUSH (who else?!!)
was apparently offered the part of chanteuse for the theme to
"MOONRAKER" which she (fortunately?) turned down. I put "fortunately"
because it was a shit song, but I put "?" because maybe if she HAD
accepted it, her career in the U.S. would be somewhere by now!
(Then again, it didn't do much for Shirley Bassey anyway, now, did it?)
Bring on Sheena Instant!! (a.k.a. "Shitna Instant", a.k.a. Sheena "Sugar
Walls" Easton.)

Speaking of Sheena Easton, (I love these stream-of-consciousness
ramblings, don't you?) she gets a lot of flack and resentment amongst
Kate Bush fans for "Stealing Away" promotional $$$$$$ away from our
heroine from EMI-AMERICA. Quote of the year from Shitna herself:

"I have total control over my career, and if I'm trite,
 it's of my own choosing...."

-ROLLING STONE, sometime this year...

Wow,Wow,Wow,Wow,Wow,Wow.....UN be LEEEEEEEEEEE vable.
(Ooooh, yeah, she's a-MAY-zing)

In response to (shoot - I forgot his name) the person who wrote the
record reviews of jazz musicians (lumping K.T. into this category with
"never for ever," I must compliment you on picking up on the contrast
and tension in the song EGYPT, especially without the help of the
video of that song.
The video comes from Kate's 1979 Christmas special on the B.B.C. which
actually preceeded the release of NEVER FOR EVER by almost 9 months, but
which included many rough mixes from the album. (Interesting differences
in the soundtrack include a different ending to The Wedding List, and
the absence of the breaking glass on the fairlight at the end of "Babooshka"
(Oh, wait...that was from her appearence on the Dr.Hook Special.)

ANYWAY, in the Video of Egypt, she is dressed as an Egyptian woman in
a flowing red headress. For the first part of the song, she croons about
the wonders and mythology surrounding Egypt, while performing in front
of glorious projections of pyramids, camels, etc, straight out of a
tourist magazine. (Or "two on the town"?...Any L.A. fans out there?)
In the second half of the song, however, these projections slowly fade
into pictures of slums, gutters, dead babies (well, not quite..), etc.
My whole point is that it took the video for me to really understand
the song, since before, I had always viewed it as a nice little ditty
about an exotic country.

On another topic: I propose that us Kate Bush fans get our own net.group!!
I mean, the deadheads have one of their own, and us bushies (?) are every
bit as enthusiastic (i.e. fanatical) as them. (I'm surprised that we don't
hear much about Bruce Springsteen here....on the other hand, all of his
fans are probably too busy working on their cars, or ramrodding down
thunder road all night with their pregnant girlfriend and their unemployment
slip to bother with computers...)

Yet another topic: How would fellow fans feel about Kate maybe switching
labels, only in the U.S.? Sort of like paul mc cartney, who gets the benefits
of EMI's incredibly great international distribution, combined with the
domestic promotional muscle of Columbia. Lets face it. Capitol records
(and especially EMI-America) are a joke. (is a joke?)
I can't remember when they last had a massive hit on the level of a
Madonna or a Prince or a Bruce Springsteen. On the other hand, if
Kate ever did become that popular, there would be a lot more negative
comments about her in these pages. As it stands now, no one can really
respond negatively because they havn't heard her music.

Anyone have any news about Break-Through? I think that malaise is
setting in fast up there on the plains of Manitoba...

That's "it" for now.
