[net.movies] Cocoon--random thoughts

evan@petfe.UUCP (Evan Marcus) (06/26/85)

Went out last night and saw Cocoon. Normally I don't rush back in in the
morning to review a movie for the net (I don't think I have before),
but this one really deserves some comments.

The first comment is DON'T MISS IT! We have a truly
memorable movie here. It has a great cast (Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy,
Maureen Stapleton, Don Ameche, and Gwen Virdon -- who I had a big crush on
when I was a child!), and is a truly heartwarming and honestly funny story.

Raquel Welch's daughter (she probably hates that reference) Tahnee (sp?) is
terrific as an alien. She has just the right amount of 'foreignness' about
her, yet she is lively and sexy and rather human throughout.

The interaction between the old folks and the aliens is marvelous. There is
a montage sort of shot that shows 3 old folks and one unmasked alien playing
cards. Very funny.

I think it's important to note that I did NOT like E.T. I don't just flip
over warm and human.

Also, no major character in the movie (read 'none of the old folks') are
treated as idiots. In fact, the only people who lack intelligence are just
there for comic foils and small parts. They also treat the audience with
some intelligence. They don't explain every single detail, letting you, the
viewer, draw some of your own conclusions, and keeping you in suspense until
the end.

I never lost interest in the movie, not even for a minute. I found it funny,
exciting, imaginative, and fun. An ideal summer movie. See it!

(The fact that this doesn't contain a major spoiler is no accident--this way
someone who hasn;t seen the movie can draw from here!)

If this is foreplay, I'm a dead man.
