I was wondering if anyone else out there was as disappointed as I was at LR's new album...yup, the torch songs are very pretty, and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra is just the right bunch of folks to have behind her (for these tunes), but whatever happenned to the firey-voiced lady of "You're No Good" and "Hurts So Bad" and "Can't Let Go"? Oh, the lady could've been another Janis... -- Rsk the Wombat UUCP: { allegra, decvax, ihnp4, harpo, teklabs, ucbvax } !pur-ee!rsk { allegra, cornell, decvax, hplabs, ihnp4, ucbvax} !purdue!rsk

She could have been another Loretta Lynn. I sympathize with you. I'm not terribly excited about her singing big- band torch songs, Gilbert & Sullivan, or grand opera (she's apparently doing "La Boheme" as her next project), but I admire her for trying not to get stuck in a rut, and doing something different. --- jayembee (Jerry Boyajian, DEC Maynard, MA) UUCP: {decvax|ihnp4|allegra|ucbvax|...}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-akov68!boyajian ARPA: boyajian%akov68.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA

#R:stat-l:-11200:ism780:20500006:000:833 ism780!judy Jun 19 14:51:00 1984 I didn't purchase the album because I heard it was bad. But I caught her on HBO (and was glad I didn't purchase the album). I think several things happened. 1) She has been working technically on her voice. It shows and it is a nice voice. 2) She never could act. When doing loud popular songs, all you have to do is belt. And if you aren't a technically proficient singer, you tend to put a lot of emotion into it to cover up the technical deficiencies. Now that she has solved them, she is concentrating too much on the technique and too little on the meaning and impact of the songs. This would improve if she could learn to act. Also, I noticed you could hear every intake of breath even when she had plenty of time to breath. It's not noticeable with electric guitars backing her up. But it drove me to distraction.
