I just received a flyer in the mail on the AdaVantage compiler from Meridian Software Systems (23141 Verdugo Dr, Suite 105, Laguna Hills CA 92653; 800-221-2522; 714-380-9800) To quote the intro: "The full power of Ada is now available for your IBM PC, PC/XT, or PC/AT. Everything from discriminants to generics to tasking. And no extra memory boards or co-processor boards required. And it's fast. And it's for a price you can afford." ($129.95 since you ask.) Nice digs at Janus, Alsys, Oasys, Ada/ED and Artek. But I remember the Digital Eletronics System flyer for ALS that in 1981 promised an Ada compiler for the Apple II and the TRS-80. So my question for the net, especially those on the Waste Coast, is to quote Butch Cassidy: "Who are those guys?" Apologies to those of you who've seen this message already; I'm re-sending it because there're reasons to believe that it didn't get through the first time. -jns ------- Forwarded Message Date: Tue, 13 Jan 87 12:20:18 -0800 From: Jerry Sweet <jsweet@ICSE.UCI.EDU> To: spray%smu@relay.cs.net cc: info-ada@ada20.isi.edu, jsweet@ICSE.UCI.EDU Subject: Re: "Who are those guys?" I'm one of "those guys", although I generally wear a different hat on the net. Here is the answer to your question ("just the facts!"): Meridian Software Systems, Inc. is a software house that's been around since 1981. Meridian, once known as Local Network Systems, has been developing and selling Pascal and C native and cross compilers; more recently they've been developing and selling Ada compilers. The flyer contains most of the answers to questions about the compiler that you're likely to ask. As I said, I try to wear a different (non-commercial) hat on the net, so please use Meridian as your first source of information (800-221-2522 toll-free outside California, 714-380-9800 inside California). For a review of the compiler (with benchmarks), refer to the December, 1986 issue of Computer Language magazine. It compared favorably with these two (mainly because Artek and Janus failed most of the tests!). Despite the favorable comparison, the article reports that Meridian Ada is incomplete but validation was planned for 1/87. Upon calling Meridian, they now estimate validating in 3/87 (the usual sliding validation date). Furthermore, the article claimed updates (including validated version) would be free! But checking with Meridian, the updates will now be $50 (not bad, I suppose). Yul Inn ESL, A Subsidiary of TRW UUCP: ...!lll-lcc!esl!yji

Olsen, President/CEO of Meridian Software Systems, responds: "Validation has always been planned for first quarter 1987. We had no opportunity to review the article, so we cannot be responsible for errors in content." -jns
