CASTOR@ADA20.ISI.EDU.UUCP (04/02/87)

Dear Friends of Ada*:

I am pleased to announce that on Monday, March 30, 1987 the
Honorable William H. Taft IV (Deputy Secretary of Defense) signed
a DoD Directive entitled "Use of Ada in Weapon Systems"
(tentatively designated DoDD 3405.xx).

This directive requires the use of Ada for computers integral to
weapons systems, effective immediately; requires the use of
validated Ada compilers; and requires the use of an Ada based
Program Design Language during the designing of the software.

As soon as we in the Ada Joint Program Office receive the
official designation for this Directive, we will distribute the
actual text over the net (which should be within a week).
