To add to the volume of e-mail out on the nets: Grace Hopper did indeed retire as a Rear Admiral (Lower Half). However, it was incorrectly noted that the Navy had returned to its practice of a few years ago by "lumping" O-7's and O-8's together. The major difference between then and now is that Rear Admirals (Lower Half) wear one star, and Rear Admirals (Upper Half) wear two stars. Before, both halves wore two stars so you couldn't tell who was who. I personally thought Commodore was an appropriate title, but somebody felt that wearing a star and not having "Admiral" in your title was a slap in the face. I don't think it was the Commodores (I mean Rear Admirals - Lower Half) who were complaining. But what do I know, I am just a Lieutenant (O-3 in the Navy) trying to make a go of it out here in the lovely desert of NWC China Lake, CA. Keep those cards and letters coming. Signed, Karl S.
