[net.movies] Showscan

arcorp@utcsri.UUCP (Alias Research Corp.) (07/09/85)

Several months ago I read about Douglas Trumbull's
"Showscan" system for movies. It uses 70mm film running at
60 frames per second to achieve a very life-like image.

Can anyone tell me which chain of Pizza stores
has set up small theatres on their premises to demonstrate
this system?

Are there any in San Francisco? (siggraph city)

	Thanks

The name of the chain is "Showbiz Pizza Place".

I don't know if there are any in SF, but it is a nation-wide chain.

Yep. I saw the original demo film at the one in Fairfax, VA (9404
Main Street; (703) 250-3351). I still have the little blurb card
on it, which reads as follows:

(front, upper left, diagonally) ``See how real a movie can feel.''
(front, center, diagonally) ``SHOWSCAN Super Cinema''
(front, lower right, diagonally) ``Showbiz Pizza Place''.

(Inside text)

``A new kind of movie.

``A new kind of theater.

``SHOWSCAN Super Cinema.

``Imagine soaring through space in a hang glider, or flying through
the Grand Canyon with a daredevil pilot---all without ever leaving
the ground! SHOWSCAN puts you, the audience, into the action with
stories and sensations that feel so real, you forget you are watching
a movie. These movies will be shown exclusively in SHOWSCAN
Theaters, only at SHOWBIZ PIZZA PLACE.

``SHOWSCAN is a revolutionary new entertainment system created by
Douglas Trumbull, the Hollywood legend and special effects wizard
of such classics as 2001: A SPACE ODDYSSEY, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF
THE THIRD KIND, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, and the director of
the current BRAINSTORM. Trumbull's new concept of cinematic
invention is SHOWSCAN, a system hailed as a revolutionary breaktrhoguh
and the most realistic way to show movies ever devised.

``SHOWSCAN is currently being unveiled at theaters around the
country that have been specially designed to present the high-speed,
high-resolution, giant-screened, 70mm films. Every seat in the
theater is the best in the house---even a child's view is not
obstructed by the back of someone's head. While a brilliant sharp
image fills the massive screen, a state-of-the-art six-channel
stereophonic sound system enhances the action on the screen.

``After the exhilaration of your first SHOWSCAN film, movies will
never be the same again. The sense of participation in the action
that the process is capable of producing may prove to be too much
for the faint of heart. Come and see how real a movie can feel.
And leave your 3-D glasses at home. SHOWSCAN isn't a gimmick---SHOWSCAN
is for real!''

(back) ``Brock * Trumbull Entertainment Corporation''.

By the way, the pizza was terrible.

Toronto in short order will be getting a Showscan theatre...

At the base of the CN Tower (the worlds lagest freestanding Phallic Symbol)
an amusement experience call "Tour of The Universe" (Galaxy? Solar System?)
is opening up. The core experience is something like a 727 simulator
with a large window looking on to a showscan presentation of the wonders
of off earth experiences.....
It has not opened yet so I can not report on the impact, but I am waiting..
