[comp.lang.ada] Bindings Request

bryk@csed-1.UUCP (Bill Brykczynski) (01/22/88)

I am interested in determining the scope of bindings which Ada will be
faced with in the near (5 year) future. Bindings, also called secondary
standards, allow a language (such as Ada) to interface with another
facility in a common fashion.

Within the ANSI/ISO arena, there currently exists a binding for Ada and
(GKS). There are also Ada bindings being proposed within the database
arena for SQL. The STARS program is funding an Ada binding to the
windowing facility X-Windows.

I can see a possible need for a binding to hierarchical or network DBMS's.
Even though almost all new applications requiring DBMS technology are using
the relational model, there does exist a great deal of applications which
still employ pre-relational technology. There exists an ANSI standard
for network databases (NDL), although I am not sure just how many
databases support that language. There is currently interest in binding
Ada to POSIX.

What other types of facilities exist (or are emerging) which Ada will need
to interface with? Please respond to the address below, and I will post
a summary.
