GROUP FORMED TO PRODUCE ADA SQL INTERFACE METHOD
The Software Engineering Institute announces the formation of a committee,
composed of representatives of Ada compiler vendors, DBMS vendors, the
government user community, and database and Ada experts, for the purpose of
describing a new method of interfacing Ada application programs and SQL
database management systems. The method is an extension of the Module Language
described in the ANSI SQL standard document.
The committee will be producing a document, tentatively entitled, ``Guidelines
for the use of the SQL Ada Module Extensions,'' which describes the method in a
manner suitable for manual implementation with existing tools. This document is
scheduled for release before 1 October 1988. It will describe the database
interface as seen by the application, as well as describing the construction of
that interface. The document can serve as the output specification of tools
which automate the construction of the interface.

I thought that someone else would have mentioned this so I
didn't forward it right away. CRI Inc. (5333 Betsy Ross Dr.,
P.O. Box 58004, Santa Clara, Calif., 95052 408/980 9898) sells
an project scheduler/data base written in Ada for VAX and Apollo.
The original version was written in COBOL for the HP-3000 (I
think, if memory serves me well). You might want to contact
them directly about their product.

If you have a copy of the June 20, 1988 issue of ComputerWorld, turn
to page 21. It contains an article ("Ada Nips COBOL In MIS Test)
written by Diane Hickey. Some representative quotes follow:
"An experiment conducted by the Ada Laboratory of Grumman Data Systems
(GDS) in Bethpage, New York, suggests that with some added routines, Ada
may surpass Cobol in regard to economy and reliability in MIS
applications."
"Ada exception-handling capabilities allow recovery from more types of

"The study reporting the experiment noted that in some Cobol-to-Ada
conversions, the amount of code was dramatically reduced."
