[comp.lang.ada] Accessing SIMTEL20's ADA repository from Bitnet

GDAU100@BGUVM.BITNET ("Jonathan B. Owen") (11/29/88)

I forward this letter to the ADA forum because sending it to ADA-SW would
miss the intended audience - us Bitnet users wanting to access the ADA
software repository at SIMTEL20.

I have sent the following letter to the Bitnet maintainers hoping that
they would help out. I have not received a reply from them.

I would like to conduct a survey to find out how many Bitnet users would
like to access the repository. Please send replies directly to me
and I will sum it up.

If there is enough interest in the matter, I am sure a solution will be
found.

                                      Sincerley,
                                                JB

----------------------------Original message----------------------------

Dear Sirs,

I have been trying for the last three months to find a way to
access the ADA repository of SIMTEL from Bitnet. These efforts
include correspondence with the moderator of LISTSERV at RPICICGE
(his name eludes me at the moment) since this ListServ has the
PDDIR and PDGET commands for obtaining CERTAIN files copied from
SIMTEL. He explained to me that he lacks disk space for keeping
the ADA related files of SIMTEL and suggested that someone else
on Bitnet copy the code of his altered Listserv for handling
such an ADA archive on another node.

I have also been in contact with the moderator of ADA-SW and
he said that it is out of the question to give Bitnet users direct
access to the repository via a MAIL FileServer due to Network load
considerations.

I would very much appreciate if you would seek a solution to
this shortcoming, possibly by finding someone on Bitnet who would
be willing to operate the RPICICGE version of ListServ. This
ListServ would be updated by SIMTEL postings via the Gateway.
Initially, the current repository can be transferred via a tape
available from SIMTEL.

Once access is accomplished, Bitnet users will finally benefit
from using off-the-shelf ADA packages, saving time, hassle and
money in ADA software development.

                                  Thank you,

                                          JB
