We are in the process of evaluating several Ada systems for an upcomming project. This project involves software development on DEC and Sun workstations. It consists of realtime and non-realtime Ada software components distributed across DEC, Sun and 680X0 target platforms. Comments based on experience with Ada systems ( Alsys, Telesoft, Verdix... ) would be greatly appreciated. Below is a brief list of topics we are concerned with. o Foreign language interface ( i.e., C, Fortran, etc.) - Effect on task scheduling ( time slicing ) o Communication between separate computer systems - Serial ( TCP/IP, RS232... ) - Bus ( Q-bus, VME... ) - DIADEM ( DIstributed Ada DEMonstrated ) or other programming environments for distributed systems. ( Does anyone have an environment based on the DIADEM work? ) ___________________________ o Speed | | - Development ( `->edit->compile->link->run-' ) - Compilation - Code execution including Context ( task ) switching o Documentation Quality and Customer Support o Bugs, deficiencies We would also like to locate Ada bindings ( preferably public domain or free ) for several software packages: o X-Windows o PHIGS ( Programmers Hierarchical Interactive Graphics System ) o Sybase o GRASS ( Geographical Resources Analysis Support System ) o GALAXY ( or any environment for programming distributed systems ). I would be glad to forward our findings to anyone who is interested. ________________ Steve Glicker Tactical System Division Applied Research Laboratories The University of Texas at Austin Internet: steve@mars.tsd.arlut.utexas.edu Telephone: (512) 835-3220 ________________
