Apparently, the much delayed film version of James Clavell's "Taipan" is finally getting under way. The dreaded Dino de Laurentiis is producing, and it will star Bryan Brown, the Australian actor best known from "Breaker Morant" and "The Thorn Birds", in the central role. (I'd always thought that Sean Connery or Michael Caine would be better suited. Oh, well.) Shooting begins in the fall, in Hong Kong (where else?). No word on the director or the rest of the cast. It should be remembered, however, that de Laurentiis was apparently extremely pleased with Michael Cimino's handling of "Year of the Dragon" (especially the fact that he brought it in a week under his shooting schedule, hence well under budget), so maybe Cimino will get to go crazy in the Far East. It really is his sort of film. Maybe they could retitle it "Dragon's Gate". -- Peter Reiher reiher@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU {...ihnp4,ucbvax,sdcrdcf}!ucla-cs!reiher
