I have added two columns this week-- TOT and SCORE. TOT shows the
total number of votes cast for that movie. SCORE is the average of
all of the votes for the movie using the following point scale:
Excellent 4
Excellent/Good 3
Good 2
Good/Average 1
Average 0
Average/Poor -1
Poor -2
Poor/Awful -3
Awful -4
These two quantities are given only for those movies with more than
five votes.
The totals line at the bottom shows the distribution of votes among
the five categories and the total number of votes cast, along with
the average score for all votes cast. A very elementary analysis
follows as a postscript.
Several people have asked what my criteria are for putting omives in
the poll. At this point I've basically been guided by the votes,
figuring that if not too many people have seen it, it will quickly
expire and disappear. If it becomes too much of a problem I might
try restricting votes to films currently making the rounds in the
theaters or on the large nationwide cable networks.

STATISTICAL ASIDE:
The following simple statistical values were derived:
Median score: 2
Mean: 1.24
Standard Deviation: 2.13
Mean +1 Standard Deviation: 3.37
Mean -1 Standard Deviation: -0.89
Assuming a skewed but otherwise normal distribution, exceptionally
good or bad movies could be considered to be those with scores above
the mean + standard deviation level, or those below the mean -
standard deviation level, respectively. Of course, movies with few
votes might have artificially extreme ratings compared to a movie
