[comp.lang.ada] Ada compilers for the PC

mcclure@tut.cis.ohio-state.edu (James E. McClure) (08/10/90)

I'm looking to purchase an Ada compiler for the PC environment. Has anyone
had any in-depth experience with any of the compilers available. Any
insight is grealy appreciated. I would like to keep the price under
$1000. I have a limited budget.

Thanks!

James E. McClure wanted to know about Ada compilers for the PC
environment.

The September 10th issue of PC Week will contain a review of the five
PC compilers: AETECH, Alsys, Meridian, R&R, and Telesoft. This
includes XT, AT/286, and AT/386 compilers under MSDOS and
POSIX-compatible Unix on an AT/386. I'll be submitting the review to
them on August 23rd, so the information will be up to date.

To get a feeling for the quality of the compilers I'm trying them out
on several production quality programs that I have written, including
one containing more than 5,000 semicolons. I'm also looking at all of
the program development tools that the vendors of these companies
offer.

I can't really say anything more about the review, but there's a
pretty wide range of price and capabilities on the PC. In particular,
McClure can get a compiler for under $1000.

Would someone give a few examples of Ada compilers that have been
DOD certified for the IBM PC? I know there is Integrada by
Aetech, but that's the limit of my experience. How does it
stack up against the others?

Thank you for the help. I will be happy to summarize if there is
interest.

Thank you for your responses to my query regarding Ada compilers for the
PC. I have received a healthy number of replies--with good content.
Right after I posted, naturally, the "roof fell in", and I must apologize
for not thanking the respondents and getting a summary posted as of yet.

The laboratory I work for has not been involved with any projects relating
to Ada as of yet. We are just now getting serious about developing some
degree of capability with the language. Pursuant to this goal, our
lab is sponsoring a multi-week (exact duration unknown) course to help
introduce Ada. We also need to come up to speed on what's out there to
support Ada.

I'll get busy and get a summary going--
