[comp.lang.ada] Expert System Shells in Ada: Summary

jonesm@nic.cerf.net (John Reading) (06/19/91)

Recently I posted a question regarding expert system shells in Ada. As
usual, I received a number of very helpful replies. I point this out
because I am using it as a selling point to my management as to why
they should continue to provide me with net access (and maybe even get
me an account in my own name :-)

Here is a (longish) summary of what I found out:

A number of people referred me to CLIPS/Ada 4.3, which was produced
under contract to NASA. CLIPS/Ada is available for free to anybody
working on a US government contract by mail:

     CSC
     16511 Space Center Blvd
     Houston, Tx 77058
     MS M30

You need to include the name and number of the government contract on
which you are working, and the name and number of a government officer
who is point of contact for the contract. Also include either 4 low
density 5 1/4 inch floppies or 2 high density 5 1/4 inch floppies.
Apparantly you better have a PC available to read these. According to
the person I talked to CLIPS/Ada is not available by FTP or email, but
they will have your order in the mail the Friday after they receive
it. The number I called, which is the CLIPS Help Desk, is (713)
280-2233.

If you are not a US government contractor, then you contact COSMIC:

     COSMIC
     University of Georgia
     382 East Broad St.
     Athens, Georgia 30602
     (404) 542-3265 - Voice
     (404) 542-4807 - Fax

They will take company PO, check, VISA or MasterCard. The part number
is MSC-21825, and the price is $400(US) for the program and $50(US)
for the documentation (domestic customers) or $800(US) for the program
and $100(US) for the documentation (international customers).

MeriTool was developed by Merit Technology for their own use on
government contracts. It costs $12,500(US) for a non-supported,
executables-only copy with 75 pages of documentation. Call Jay Labhart
(214) 248-2502.

Aida (That's as bad as "Franz Lisp" :-) is advertized as being written
in Ada for developing real-time expert systems. I haven't personally
followed up on this one, but the contact information I have is

   Bernard Schnetzler
   INRETS
   2, rue du General Malleret-Joinville
   94114 Arcueil Cedex
   France
   (33 1) 47 40 71 27
email: sch@inrets.inrets.fr (may not be reading this)

Many thanks to all who responded.

You might add AdaTAU developed for the STARS program at the Unisys Center
for Advanced Information Technology. AdaTAU is a rule-based system that
can be used independently or in conjunction with AdaKNET a KL-1 style
semantic network. For more information contact jjs@prc.unisys.com.
