For each movie, the number of votes in each of the five categories is shown.
Since votes can be split across two adjacent categories, totals for a category
are not necessarily integers. TOT shows the total number of votes cast for
that movie. SCORE is the average of all of the votes for the movie using
the following point scale:
Excellent 4 Good/Average 1 Poor -2
Excellent/Good 3 Average 0 Poor/Awful -3
Good 2 Average/Poor -1 Awful -4
These two quantities are given only for those movies with more than 5 votes.
The totals line at the bottom shows the distribution of votes among
the five categories and the total number of votes cast, along with
the average over all votes cast.
To submit a vote, simply send me mail at the address below listing
each movie you wish to vote for, one to a line, and the vote you
give it: Excellent, Good, Average, Poor, Awful. You may split a vote
across two adjacent categories-- see below. It would be most helpful
if you separate the movie title and your vote with a single tab:

Duplicate votes will be rejected. Movies which have not received
any votes for two weeks will be put on the next posting's "EXPIRING"
list, like the one above. If a third week passes and the movie has
still not received a vote, it is archived and dropped from the list.

I have received several suggestions on grouping movies together
differently and changing the ordering scheme of the list. I have decided
to split the films into two categories: Current and Other. The
division is somewhat arbitrary, but generally Current films are
those films that are on their first run in the U.S. and are
reasonably widely distributed. Films that are making a second
appearance in nationwide release (more or less), such as "Ghostbusters"
or "E.T.", are also included. Whenever a Current film expires, it
can only subsequently reappear in the Other Films list, unless it is
re-released nationwide (like the two films previously mentioned;
some of the Disney features would probably fall under this category,
too).
There have also been several suggestions to list the five best and
worst films, or order the entire list by SCORE, rather than
alphabetically. I have compromised and ordered the Current list by
SCORE, while leaving the Other list ordered alphabetically. The
Other list simply encompasses too many films, of different kinds and
times, to make any sort of ordering based on a rating worthwhile, in
my opinion.
I'm sorry I haven't had time to answer everyone back personally, but
I have been busy; I'll try to get back to you ASAP. Hopefully the changes
noted above will encompass most of the recent suggestions I have
gotten. Keep those votes coming-- especially for some of the
newer current films. Many of these have few votes, so if you've seen one
of them, let me know what you think of it.
