[] Most of the replies to my question about read tables in FORTH have been quite peculiar. I thought I asked if anyone had implemented them. I was hoping to get some feed back on there usefulness and/or value as an extension mechanism in FORTH. All but one reply fell into one or more of three catagories. 1) One group of people commented that "if you add that to FORTH, it won't be FORTH any more", the more extreme members of this group ordered me not to add such a feature to FORTH. To these people I would like to say that I don't really care if it would be FORTH or not. And I certainly will not force you to use read tables. 2) Another group gave me detailed instructions on who to implement read tables in FORTH. All of these were different and all depended on what looked like implementation specific hooks. Thank you. 3) The smallest group suggested that (some dialect of LISP) has read tables. And that if I wanted to learn about them I should go play with LISP. Yes indeed, I have "played around" with LISP for many years and have used read tables in LISP, I've even implemented them. That's where I got the idea. I've also "played around" with FORTH for a while. Please, no more replies that don't address the question. -- --- Bob Pendleton Evans & Sutherland Computer Corporation UUCP Address: {decvax,ucbvax,ihnp4,allegra}!decwrl!esunix!bpendlet Alternate: {ihnp4,seismo}!utah-cs!utah-gr!uplherc!esunix!bpendlet hacking code, hacking code. sometimes happy, sometimes bored, almost lost in a pile of spode. tell the people "I'm only hacking code." --- I am solely responsible for what I say. ---
