[comp.lang.forth] Multi-user FORTH for IBM compatible

cyrus@hi.UUCP (Tait Cyrus) (09/19/87)

Sorry if this is old news, but I am new to this group.

I am looking for any information on FORTH running on a pc. Whether
it is PD or not I don't care, although PD would be nice :-) because
I will need to add some special functions and device drivers.
Also, if there is a FORTH that runs on a pc, is there a version that
supports multi-users? Basically, I either need a version of FORTH
that allows two users, on two different terminals, to do things or
I will need a multi-user operating system under which I can run FORTH.

Thanks in advance for any and all help

I am also looking for this same information along with recommendations
from people who are actually using implementations. Any information
you have will help.

I have used primarily PC/Forth and UR/Forth from Laboratory Microsystems, Inc.
on the PC. They have a nice BBS describing there products and lots of other
things. The BBS number is (213)306-3530, 2400 Baud (or less), 8 bits, no
parity, 1 stop. I also use their Metacompiler to compile ROMed applications
for the 80x86, z80, and Hitachi 64180 microprocessors using the PC as the host
development system.

LMI's UR/Forth has a pretty nice multitasker (with semaphores, timers, etc.)
built in but is not multiuser. One of the few (only?) suppliers of a
multiuser Forth for the PC is (as far as I know) polyForth by Forth, Inc.
Look for their number in EDN-type magazines.
