[comp.lang.forth] Any decent PD Forths for Unix?

sjrudek@sactoh0.UUCP (Steve J. Rudek) (05/06/89)

Is anyone aware of a decent Forth which I could get to run under
Microport System V/AT (286)? I've seen "cforth" but it is very
incomplete and (even according to its author) not a fair
reflection on forth. I'd prefer a PD product with source code
available--I'm not likely to stick with this machine for more than
another year or so.

A *good* Forth written 90% in C with bottlenecks in assembly would
be ideal and might make Forth a serious alternative to C under
Unix. It seems like a project that someone at FIG would have
undertaken already?

It's even crossed my mind that it would be a good long-term project
for me to get involved with if it hasn't already been done. I'm
not that hot at Forth, though, and I've never written a real
compiler/interpreter so I'd definitely be taking a dive into deep
water. Has anyone else out there actually done their own
implementation who might be interested in such a project?

Please email me a copy of any responses as my normal machine doesn't
currently get this group.
