[comp.lang.forth] Forth for UNIX

wgh@ubbpc.UUCP (William G. Hutchison) (02/14/89)

So what forth do you folks like for UNIX System V?

Commercial/supported only, please.

Thanks!

Bill, the grand dungeon master of Forth under UNIX so far
as we know is William "Mitch" Bradley of SUN, author of CForth-83,
a JSR Forth for UNIX and also an assembler Forth for Sun/OS.

His consulting firm is Bradley Forthware, PO BOX 4444,
Mountain View, CA 94040. He can be reached via uucp at wmb@sun.com ...
suggest you get his recommends.

Let us know how this turns out! I find it quite interesting
that you are interested.

I know this must have been posted 1042 time already by other people, but
I'm really in need of a Forth for UNIX. If anyone could point me to
a ftp or uucp site where I can snarf this stuff I would appreciate it!

			Thanks

I beleive you wish to ftp uunet.uu.net. I have a version of a threaded
interpreter written in C for Unix ( I do not beleive it is 100% Forth
though, but that is easily remedied ). I know that I ftp-ed from
someplace, but can't remember where.

If you have *no* luck finding it, I may be coerced into mailing what I
have, but it is a hassle as the machine it is on is not well connected.

On uunet, in comp.sources.unix/volume1, I believe, is a file or
directory called cforth. I've gotten it compiled and apparently running
under SCO XENIX 386. It's an implementation of FORTH-79. I haven't
really stress tested it, but it seems to work fine. This is
probably what time@oxtrap.UUCP is refering to.

Ok, the Forth you are both *referring* to is Allan C. Pratt's
CFORTH.

The Forth you *want* is CForth83 by Mitch Bradley, wmb@sun.com,
~$50.00 shareware.
