Here are the results to my earlier music quiz with a twist. Three points for
every correct song title; two points for naming the correct *original* artist.
PLUS: name the general theme of the quiz for ten points. PLUS: name the one
question that doesn't belong in the quiz based on that theme (and the
reason WHY it doesn't belong) for fifteen points. PLUS: bonus points
for naming the most recent cover version of a tune (provided you've
correctly named and identified the original artist), if indeed it has
been covered by another artist. That makes a possible 100 points plus
potential bonuses. The answers are listed below in the following format:
n. The line from the song...
"THE TITLE OF THE SONG" - THE ORIGINAL ARTIST(S)
[THE NAME OF THE BAND THAT MOST RECENTLY COVERED THE SONG and/or any
other relevant information.]
(# of people that knew the title, the artist, the covering artist)
--------------------------------------
1. People say believe half of what you see, son, and none of what you hear...
"HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE" - MARVIN GAYE or
GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS
[THE SLITS was the band I was looking for, since they covered the song
on the B-side of their Instant Hit single, but I gave credit for
Creedence Clearwater Revival]
(2, 2, 2?)
2. It doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as you are there...
"DANCIN' IN THE STREETS" - MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS
[VAN HALEN or FRED FRITH were the answers I was looking for. No one
knew of Fred Frith's excellent version on his Ralph Records single.
I also gave Andy Tannenbaum credit for the Grateful Dead.]
(5, 5, 4?) [second highest number of correct responses]
3. Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my circus hid...
"TEARS OF A CLOWN" - SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES
[THE ENGLISH BEAT. One person thought it was the Specials.]
(4, 3, 1)
4. You know, papa disapproved, my mama boo-hooed...
"I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER" - STEVIE WONDER
[One person listed the Beach Boys as covering this song. ???]
(4, 4, 1?)
5. ..., I was glad to let you go, but not since I've seen you in his arms...
"I WANT YOU BACK" - THE JACKSON 5
[GRAHAM PARKER]
(3, 3, 1)
6. Didn't I treat you right now, baby, didn't I?
"STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF LOVE" - THE FOUR TOPS
[ROD STEWART. No one got Rod Stewart, but two people listed this
line as coming from "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" by the Delfonics.
Again, ???? {I guess most people would rather forget that Rod Stewart
covered this song. :-} ]
(2, 2, 0) (+2??)
7. I grow impatient for a love to call my own...
"YOU CAN'T HURRY LOVE" - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES
[PHIL COLLINS]
(2, 2, 2) [I had thought this one would be the easiest]
8. Politicians say "More taxes will solve everything", and the band played on..
"BALL OF CONFUSION" - THE TEMPTATIONS
[TINA TURNER]
(6, 6, 1) [most correct responses, surprisingly]
9. But who are they to judge us just because our hair is long...
"WHAT'S GOING ON" - MARVIN GAYE
[I just heard recently that there is a cover of this song, but
I don't recall who recorded it. No one else did either.]
(1, 2, 0) [second fewest number of correct responses]
10. In that case I don't want no part, 'cause that would only break my heart...
"SECOND THAT EMOTION" - SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES
[JAPAN. One person suggested Linda Ronstadt, but I believe it
was another Miracles song that she covered.]
(3, 3, 0)
11. Think about what you're tryin' to do to me...
"THINK" - ARETHA FRANKLIN
(4, 4, 0)
12. I know you're no good to me, but free from you I'll never be...
"NOWHERE TO RUN" - MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS
(2, 2, 0)
13. You think that I don't feel love, what I feel for you is real love...
"LOVE CHILD" - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES
[Most people knew it was the Supremes, but two people named two
different songs other than Love Child.]
(2, 4, 0)
14. ..., give me one more chance, won't you please let me back in your arms...
"I WANT YOU BACK" - THE JACKSON 5
[I know, I already used this song. Trick question.]
(2, 3, 1)
15. ...and I think I can deal with everything goin' through your head...
"SUPERWOMAN" - STEVIE WONDER
[Only one person got this one. From Stevie's "Music of My Mind"
album.]
(1, 1, 0) [fewest correct responses]
For those of you who haven't guessed, the theme is Motown, and the question
that doesn't belong is #11. The reason? Aretha Franklin recorded for
Atlantic Records, not for Motown or a Motown subsidiary company (like Tamla).
I gave five points to one person who suggested (among other themes) 60s R&B.
And now the scores:
inmet!andrew (Andrew Rogers):
14 questions, 1 artistname only, 10 pointer,
15 pointer, 6 bonuses = 95 + 6
ihu1e!jvs:
10 questions, 10 pointer, 15 pointer, 3 bonuses = 75 + 3
hopd3!dvw (Diane Wilkerson):
9 questions, 1 artistname only, 10 pointer,
15 pointer, 3 bonuses = 72 + 4
inmet!jlp:
6 questions, 1 artistname only, 5 out of 10, no bonus = 32
masscomp!trb (Andy Tannenbaum):
2 questions, 2 artistnames only, 10 pointer, 1 bonus = 24 + 1
ihuxj!tucson (B. A. Saltzmann):
2 questions, 1 bonus = 10 + 1
The scores of ihu1e!jvs and inmet!jlp would have 5 points added to each
if the line from question 6 was indeed in the Delfonics song.
Thanks to all who participated.
