[comp.lang.forth] OLIS: Update

trolfs@vax1.tcd.ie (Tommy) (08/18/89)

I have finished writing the OLIS server, however due to the fact that
I have exams coming up in the near future (Sept!), I don't have the
time to put it on line. OLIS will open as soon as I finish my exams
(that is if I pass them - fingers crossed).
For now thought, I am taking interesting postings off the NEWS (I've
extracted the thread on RPN in languages) and putting them in to OLIS.
If you DON'T want anything that you have posted in NEWS to end up in
OLIS then tell me, otherwise I'll consider everything to be fair game.
I will also try to keep a list of the names of people whos articles I
swipe, so that individuals can check to see if they are on it. Anyway,
just to let you know. See you all in late September, if all goes well.

Sorry for the delay in bringing you this month's update. Not many new files
this month, sadly. However, I do have some good news to pass on. More about
that later. First, here is the OLIS update.

NEW FILES:

Only four new files this month and two of them source code.

80386_ASSEMBLER 33K Last updated -27-NOV-1989
The following code is the source screen code for a 80386
assembler. It was published in Dr. Dobb's Journal, October
1988, Volume 13, Issue 10. According to the author, it was
developed using F83 by Laxen and Perry. But it could be
port to other forth easily. It could also be used as a
                   cross assembler on non-80386 system.

FIG_DISKS 3K Last updated -22-NOV-1989
Lists the current disks in the New FIG Disk Library. This
is Forth software from the Forth Community. Each disk costs
                   around $6.00 ($25.00 for 5).

OO_FORTH 42K Last updated -22-NOV-1989
Make your Forth Object Oriented with this portable OO-Forth
source code by Dave Weinstein. You also get MODULA-2 style
                   modules and Pascal/C style records.
*Need Shell Archiver to unpack files*

FORTHNET 9K Last updated -10-Dec-1989
ForthNet is a virtual network of Forth dedicated BBSs and
other on-line resources. This file gives an introductory
history by Gary Smith (one of the pioneers behind the fast
growing network) as well as the current listing of on-line
                   resources that make up ForthNet.

Changes to present Files:

The file MANDLE has been changed to MANDELBROT

Files in the pipe line:

I have a few files which are stuck on my computer at home. Untill I get my
modem, they will have to stay there. Also, I haven't had the time to go through
all the new and very interesting postings in comp.lang.forth some of which will
be digested and put into OLIS. The main problem is that I don't have enough
time. When I get my modem (if it ever arrives!!) I will be able to do this all
on my Amiga at home and burn a bit of nidnight oil, so things should get better.
However, in the mean time bear with me. If someone would like to help and
become a co-editor then drop me a note. No qualifications needed. Justa bit of
free time.

OLIS and source code submissions:

OLIS has received a fair deal of source code submissions. As grateful as I am
for any material sent to OLIS, I must point out that OLIS is not meant to be a
source code library. At the moment I don't mind putting source code files in
OLIS as I'm not pushed for space. However, when I do start to run out
then I'll have to start removing them to make room for other files. I might be
willing to start an off-line source code and binary library in the *distant*
future. Anyway, send me source code if you want. It might not end up in OLIS
but I will file it away for future use.

ForthNet and OLIS:

I don't know if many of you are aware of ForthNet or what it is. For those who
don't, let me explain. ForthNet is a virtual network made up of Forth dedicated
BBSs and other on-line resources (such as the Forth Roundtable on GEnie). Most
of the people who use ForthNet are experienced and seasoned Forth programmers.
Also, some of the nodes on the ForthNet have extensive libraries of code and
information. If you want to know more about ForthNet and how to avail of it,
check outhe new FORTHNET olis file. As you can see, ForthNet has a great wealth
of talent and resources which any novice or intermediate Forther would give
his/her right arm for. The good news is that OLIS will hopefully be "hooking
up" with ForthNet through Gary Smith (one of the leading forces behind the
creation of ForthNet). This "hook up" is still in it's infant stages and
hopefully other plans to link ForthNet to Usenet will mean that Usenet
users will have access to ForthNet and vice versa. Of course, this means
more work for poor little me, so again if anyone is willing to help out as
co-editor (especially if you have a particular field of interest) let me know.

Well, I hope I haven't forgotten to mention anything. Anyway, till next time...

- Tommy.
