Can anyone provide me with a complete list of the 11(?) movies directed by Stanley Kubrick? Brief synopsis of each with personal ratings (i.e. 'm' out of 'n' stars) would also be appreciated. Please mail to me and I'll post results if y'all 'r interested. ***** Trevor K. Flory Develcon Electronics Ltd., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, CANADA UUCP: ...!ihnp4!alberta!sask!zaphod!flory

I would disagree with one * for "Clockwork Orange" - more like ***1/2 to ****!

There was also a movie titled Lolita. (Neither of which I've seen.) I'd give Barry Lyndon a two star. Slow moving, and Ryan O'Neal does good job impersonating a dead man, but the situations and battle effects are stupendous and tragic. Also, it's Kubrick-long(which means very).

<> Kubrick also did "Spartacus", which starred Kirk Douglas. Spartacus is the story of a Roman slave rebellion. (A favorite topic for Soviet socialist- realism, by the way.) This is a fairly early movie (pre-Lolita), and I remember it as a well done pot-boiler. "Lolita" is an interesting movie too. It caught the flavor of the Nabokov novel quite nicely. I think James Mason played the lead, with Peter Sellers in a very odd role. "Barry Lyndon" was a beautiful movie to look at, if nothing else. - Judy Grass, University of Illinois - Urbana {ihnp4,pur-ee,convex}!uiucdcs!grass grass%uiuc.arpa

"The Killing" and "Paths of Glory" are two of Kubrick's early films that are well worth seeing anytime. The first is sort of film noir, but the characters are quirky enough that it is not quite. The story keeps you going, and there are many, many details of situation and character thrown in that make this film fascinating. "Paths of Glory" takes place in WW1 and concerns the actions of a slightly deranged officer. His superiors know he is no good, but due to the structure of the army they are unable to remove him from command until he has gone so far as to waste the lives of three soldiers. The superiors have to let the men be killed. An excellent film in the "War is Hell" genre. Excellent acting by Kirk Douglas (Jr?) and others. Great camera work. Very well written. Not gory: the action is in the interpersonal dynamics. --- {ucbvax, decwrl}!sun!alan "Extraordinary how potent cheap music is." Noel Coward
