The following is a letter from Gary Smith, one of the FIG sysops on GEnie,
regarding the ForthNet <-> comp.lang.forth link:
The GEnie Forth RoundTable has included as its mission global connectivity
and global Forth information distribution. These mission goals were well
in evidence prior to the more recent Usenet link via ForthNet. ForthNet
had already established nodes in five countries (U.S.A., Canada, Japan,
United Kindom, and Australia) before the first link to Usenet was made. It
has been our intent to be responsible citizens and adhere to the needs and
conventions of those we connect with.
This must be said. We are well aware of the irresponsible message dumping
by another affiliated GEnie RoundTable. We can not presume to answer for
those actions. We are, however, perpared to answer for our own actions. We
approached Usenet SysGods and solicited approval before the first message
was ever ported (Eric Fair among those we asked - and received guidance and
approval from.). We have attempted to tune messages from a variety of alien
bases to conform to the needs of Usenet comp.lang.forth. If you feel we are
still failing to provide as well as receive, please help us serve all our
mutual needs. Give us your suggestions. Let us address your objections. As
the new kid on comp.lang.forth we are certainly open to your constructive
criticism. After all, Forth and Forth information distribution is THE COMMON
GOAL.
