I haven't seen anything yet about _Agnes_of_God_ and since I just saw it the other day and really enjoyed it, I thought I would express my views. It was a very well-rounded movie. Some excellent acting performances, good cinematography, good use of color in the settings, good script, good editing, good plot. Visually, it is the first American film that I've seen (make that commercial American film) that managed to learn anything from what Ingmar Bergman has been putting out for years--like the use of color, settings, visually defined emotions. As far as acting performances went...Meg Tilly is fantastic as Agnes. If she doesn't get an Oscar for this, I wash my hands of the whole Motion Picture Academy. Anne Bancroft is very good--as usual--as the Mother Superior. She comes up with a character that has many facets and is really a person. Jane Fonda, on the other hand, came across as rather wooden in places. Which is too bad, because I think she's a pretty good actress, usually. In many ways I kinda got the feeling that this was just another "cause" movie for her. Too bad. However, the movie is well worth seeing just for Tilly's performance alone. Actually, I didn't want to see this film because I thought it would be too much of a downer. I wanted to see something a little more off-the-wall if you will. But it wasn't a downer. The ending, while not uplifting and invigorating, was satisfying and left you feeling that everything had been resolved for the best of everyone concerned. To wind up this article, I liked the movie. It left you with some good food for discussion--if you like analyzing movies, or philosophizing about their content. I'd recommend it. -- \"\t\f1A\h'+1m'\f4\(mo\h'+1m'\f1the\h'+1m'\f4\(es\t\f1\c _______________________________________________________________________ Terry Grevstad Network Research Corporation {sdcsvax, hplabs}!sdcrdcf!psivax!nrcvax!terry ucbvax!calma!nrcvax!terry

Well, if memory serves me, there's a very good reason: the cinematographer (whose name eludes me unfortunately) worked on some of Bergman's films. Charley Wingate

From: nax (Nax-Paul) The director of photography was Sven Nykvist (sp?), who is justifiably famous for his work with you-know-whom. The photography in AoG was very good, but on the whole I found the movie disappointing: - it was very Hollywood - Jane Fonda came off as stident and unbelievable - the shrink-as-detective idea was never raised above the readymade cliches (Those meetings with the judge- ugh!) - the climax was predictable (I killed the baby!), and having Meg Tilly stigmata-ize then was this movie's equivalent to the gratuitous car chase - the ending was weak One * out of four. Very Missable.

Why do they keep casting outstandingly beautiful women as a character self-described as an "ugly duckling"? Ten years from now, at least Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, or someone with a face with as much character will be available... > - the shrink-as-detective idea was never raised above > the readymade cliches (Those meetings with the judge- ugh!) ...because it really was not an investigation into the truth of the crime itself, but into the NATURE of truth. > - the climax was predictable (I killed the baby!), and having Meg > Tilly stigmata-ize then was this movie's equivalent to the > gratuitous car chase ...because this is one of those stories which doesn't really HAVE a climax and a denouement... the real high point is the last moment. > - the ending was weak ...well, that's what makes horce racing. The author deleted a line from the play, by the way, which made the ending less ambiguous; Martha quits smoking in the play. I'm glad he added the ambiguity. > >One * out of four. Very Missable. Good acting does not necessarily a good movie make. -Brian Diehm Tektronix, Inc. P.S. Jane Fonda should by now be ashamed of herself. She's been playing the SAME role since Julia! And it's a second-class role, too.
