[comp.lang.forth] All About Forth

koopman@a.gp.cs.cmu.edu (Philip Koopman) (07/02/90)

As mentioned in a recent posting, Glen Haydon has recently
published a substantially revised and expanded copy of
"All About Forth". I have had a chance to browse through
a copy (but not read it completely yet!). For those interested,
here is a brief description.

All About Forth: an annotated glossary, Glen B. Haydon
  (Third Edition, revised and expanded).

The First and Second Editions were implementation manuals for
the Forth-79 compatible MVP-Forth. This book is much more
ambitious, and documents the following "standards":
Fig-Forth, 79 Standard, MVP-Forth, 83 Standard, F83,
and F-PC. This edition is typeset & laser-printed using
Ventura Publisher.

Contents of the book:
  - 25 pp., preface & description of the inner interpreter
  - 403 pp., glossary of almost 500 Forth words
each word contains the following sections as appropriate:
. word name & stack comment
. descriptions, including full text from each of the "standards"
     . pronunciation
. implementations: high level and/or 8088/86 assembler for
           each "standard"
     . an example
     . comments/cautions/notes
  - 21 pp., copy of the Fig-Forth Installation Manual (Nov. 1980)
  - 46 pp., copy of the Forth-79 Standard (Oct. 1980)
  - 88 pp., copy of the Forth-83 Standard (Aug. 1983)
  - 3 pp., copy of the Forth-79 Handy Reference
  - 5 pp., index to words in the glossary
