[comp.lang.forth] USENET Stats for comp.lang.*

trolfs@vax1.tcd.ie (06/27/90)

[I posted this earlier this month, but was informed that outgoing
messages weren't getting out. Here it is again, for the first time I
     hope]

Well, news.lists has regular stats on USENET readers. I've taken the
latest set for the comp.lang.* newsgroups and reposted here so that
you can see the breakdown across groups. This gives a rough idea of
the numbers reading this group, but you can't really say who they are.
I would hazard a guess that most are intermediate Forthers who have
played around with Forth but never really done anything with it (like
myself). The numbers seem quite encouraging, seeing as how USENET
represents mostly universities and large organisations most of whom
probably don't use Forth at all.

[ I'm thinking of drawing up a questionaire (sp?) for OLIS, to
get an *idea* of what people think about Forth? what they use it for?
what they would like to see happening in the future? etc.. If anyone
has any ideas, or experience, on drawing up a simple questionaire, I'd
    be grateful for the input.]

I don't know how relevent this is to how many people read Forthnet.

I read comp.lang.forth, but I have Forthnet in my kill file, because
it's got too much BBS chatter. Cut your count of readers down to 325.

Ditto. Make that 324.

Some Of Us said, when this linkup was first proposed between
ForthNet and USENET that Certain People Were Going To Be Unhappy.
Some Of Us said that USENET traffic tends to be reserved for More
Carefully Reasoned Postings Than Those Entered Into PCBoard BBS'es.
Some Of Us May Have Been Right Despite The Flack They Took For
Expressing Unpopular Opinions On ForthNet.

Any, Rob, Pete ... whynot do what I do ... don't use rn to
read comp.lang.forth, use nn which carefully highlights the ForthNet
postings, and ... don't read 'em!

Boys and Girls, can you say, "bozo filter"? I though you could!

It's spelled "/ForthNet/h:j". No need for "nn", which doesn't run worth
a damn on systems with broken large models nohow.
