Well, FIG buddies, the deadline (buried in FORTH Dimensions magazine some months back) for submitting nominating petitions to the Forth Interest Group Board of Directors has come and gone. Apparently sixteen of us felt that I would be a good candidate and signed petitions to that effect. This fell short of the required 25 signatures. No one submitted *ANY* signatures on anyone else's behalf, according to Forth Interest Group Secretary Mike Elola. The Board, however, plans to nominate and seat at least one new member, an individual who did not submit their name to the membership, nor submit any nomination petition. This according to Vice President Dennis Ruffer who told me tonight on GEnie FIG RoundTable that membership support for a board member is not needed, only support from the Board itself. He told me that the membership doesn't care. My position is that the Board has gone far enough in running FIG like East Germany before the thaw. But maybe the membership has spoken. Maybe the FIG Board is right, that the members don't care enough to matter. Maybe it's right that we don't have an annual FIG convention any more. Maybe it's right that FIG teeters on the brink of not being able to afford to publish FORTH Dimensions magazine. I don't think so, though. I think FIG members do care. If you think FIG members matter, write or call FIG and tell them.
