[comp.lang.forth] Fifth for 680x0, and other dreams

lantis@louis_xiv.CS.ORST.EDU (David Lantis) (10/20/90)

I saw a 1985 copy of fifth for the MS-DOS market. In the information
included with the program there was mention of a Fifth for 680x0
machines to be released in the near future. Does this exist? And if
so, how could one get ahold of a copy? I would prefer an ftp site. Any
information would be welcome.

p.s. I was somewhat empressed with the idea, as my idea of the
'perfect' programming environment would be a cross of smalltalk and
forth. A browser would allow you to see and modify source for a word
causing words that use that word to use the 'new' definition, would
allow grouping of words into related 'families' though retaining access
to the words ( unlike fifth), would allow modules of 'private' words
accessed only by an interface word (like fifth), and would allow
rearranging the order of words in the dictionary with error message
windows for try to put a word before a word it called. Sort of a
hacker's dream, if I don't like something I can go in and fix it right
now without having to recompile the whole thing. If any one knows of
such a system I would be interested in hearing about it.
