[comp.lang.forth] Two Questions for forth gurus......

I have two "simple" questions:

1:
   Is there a C version of forth available in the public domain? This
   would probably be just a toy, but I would like somthing like
   this so that I could practice at home. 
    Is there an ftp site for stuff like this?

2:

   Could someone explain the difference between COMPILE, [COMPILE],
     and immediate and [ ... ] ?  I have Brodie's Starting forth,
    Are there any better books that I should read?
