[comp.lang.forth] A Bad Idea is swimming around my brain.

jon@Apple.COM (Jon Singer) (03/20/91)

I have been reading an article (Programming Languages Past, Present,
and Future, in the July 1985 UNIX/WORLD magazine); this article seems
to show a bit of anti-Forth bias, but that is neither here nor there,
for me.

My issue is that the article mentions Forth as being "an
object-oriented language for those who want to manipulate the computer
itself". It also talks about COBOL program generators as examples of
something useful and, well, let me quote again, this time about
ordinary businesspeople: "They don't want to wait for MIS to make
changes in existing programs; instead, they want to use COBOL program
generators that tailor general programs to their specific needs."

I must confess that I don't have much feeling in my heart for COBOL,
and I suspect that the same is true of you. But, well, geez. I can put
6 and 6 together and get a fish! What the world needs is a Forth
program generator that any regular user can get mileage from. Right?
That way, you can invade the business world and become much more
widespread, without people having to turn into backward Polacks like
me (my grandpa was from Przemysl). I think this is hot. The only
problem is the name. What can we call such a thing?

There's only one possible name: Forth Generation Language.

Mua-ha-ha.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Please forgive me. When the red fit comes upon
me, there is no holding back. It is... too much.

By the way, if you wish to respond to me, flame me, or whatever,
PLEASE do so via email. I never have the time to read news. In fact,
someone had to tell me which newsgroup I should post this on.
