Perhaps knowing New York better than I do would have helped, but I did not
think this a particularly funny film, not eliciting more than a few chuckles
from me. I don't think many other people in the audience thought it very
funny either (I saw it in northern Mass.), as I don't ever remember hearing
anyone else giving much more than a chuckle either. I, and several others
I know, were disappointed by this film which has been given such high marks
for comedy. It was amusing, it was original, I enjoyed it, but it just
wasn't all that funny. About a +1 on the -4 to +4 scale.

I would not have thought that knowing NYC would make that much
difference, but perhaps it does. I just found some of the weird people
pretty funny. The weirdo described in the film who loved WIZARD OF OZ,
for example, is putting a perfectly valid interpretation on the film,
but not one I would have thought of. Coming up as it did, I thought
thought was a clever piece of humor. There were all kinds of little
ironies tying apparently unconnected pieces of the film together. I
won't repeat them here so as not to spoil the film, but it was just an
amazing script. It plays very heavily on the viewers' expectations.
It is not to everyone's taste, I suppose, but it is certainly worth a
try.

I grew up in Western Mass. I didn't see too many of the SoHo types
there. They all seem to gravitate to the big cities. It is hard to
say what I would have thought about the film had I not lived for some
time near NYC. That could make a difference.
