I am assuming that this is where I should introduce my self
I have been an off and on member of FIG since 83. Since then I have
messed about with a number of Forths starting with Vic-forth,
( two screens are avalable on an unexpanded Vic-20).

Since I am a hobbyist my limit has been $99 for a forth
language program. Since I couldn't get the most expensive one to
load & when, I talked to the developer himself on the phone, he
seriously told me " there were no bugs in the prg." !!
This was a well advertised product. Any way lets say I am not
innocent anymore. Also, on a diffrent platform & implementation I
spent weeks struggling with trying to get a prg. in "Starting Forth"
to work, finally I got help from a friend who found a non-standard
definition. And so it goes - -

I have read the editorials and "where Forth is going" stuff, in
Forth Dimensions. I may have a unusual perspective ( I can see the
forest but not the trees ) I have proven my loyalty to the Idea of
Forth with out any accomplishment. I will read anything I can get my
hands on. ( now that I have access to on-line info. I am gona have
to be more selective.) I have PD spiffy versions of other languages,
yet I keep searching for a forth for the Atari-ST.

I have examined Bradleys ForthMacs, the problem there is, he
has already done everything!

#1153 F83ST.ARC G.Morison has been entertaining me for a long
time. I have versions from three diffrent sources, all diffrent,
I must admit I don't programm well enough to have much confidence
in my ability to fix it ( I must be implying that it is too buggy
to do the exercises in "Starting Forth"). owever if it worked
it would be just what I have been looking for. Please suggest which
catagory and topics I should read first in context of the above.
thanks - jon -*s

I'm not sure what to make of this. If I have already done everything,
why do I feel so busy?

Cheers,

 ...Beyond His Call to Duty

The Forth Interest Group being a volunteer organization means that
people give of their time and energy to support the organization. It is often
expected and too often unrewarded. Yet there are some who give beyond what is
expected, some who seem to not be satisfied with the normal, some who seek
out the lost and provide help, some who provide for providing s sake without
thought of reward.

Each year since 1979, one person from the Forth community is selected to
be recognized from the many who are in the category of having Contributed
Beyond their Call to Duty toward the support of the Forth Interest Group.
The group of other so-recognized people, known as "The FIGGY s", chooses to
honor, and therefore drafts into their ranks, the one who in their opinion
conspicuously stands out in this category.

The FIG RoundTable on GEnie has grown over the last five years and has
provided another communication channel besides Forth Dimensions between FIG
members and others in the Forth community. The difficult and demanding part
of providing this form of communication is the job of being a Sysop. The
energy and spirit of the Sysop is reflected directly in the energy and spirit
of the network. The job on GEnie is so demanding that several Sysops are
required, and the Sysops of GEnie hold one of their own in great esteem.

So, for his tireless efforts as Sysop of the FIG RoundTable on GEnie,
and for his patience for the last four years as producer and host of the
Thursday nights Figgy Bars on GEnie, The FIGGY s have selected and would
like to present to you:

The 1990 FIGGY of the Year

                                   Gary Smith

John D. Hall called me last night (20 February 1991) to advise me I was the
1990 FIGGY honoree. I was stunned by this announcement then. I am still
stunned.

I personally feel there are individuals who have contributed more to Forth
than I in any year, let alone 1990 when so many people gave of themselves to
develop the language, develop products using Forth, and promoting Forth. There
are many I also feel did more to promote and help FIG than I, so this award is
a total surprise.

Quite frankly, if I have achieved anything in behalf of Forth or FIG it has
been with help. That is true of the GEnie Forth RoundTable, and that is
certainly true of ForthNet. I would like to think I was able to use their
skills to aid any contribution I may have made. In that sense it is an award
to a modular component. I sort of like that.

I am stunned. I am absolutely flattered. Thanks - everybody.
  Gary

Congratulations Gary! You deserve the award, and more, for all you have done.
Your efforts are most certainly appreciated by all.

Thanks for all you do!

Please join me in welcoming Elliott Chapin to the ranks of sysop for the Forth
RoundTable on GEnie. He will be handling the Bulletin Board maintenance that
we so desperately need. Please be nice to him as he learns the ropes.

Elliott, could you give us a little background on yourself? Maybe put it in
topic 8 "Who's here" though so you won't have to move your own message <grin>.
