[net.movies] Jagged Edge:How'd They Do That?

cwn@mtgzz.UUCP (c.w.nash) (10/30/85)

Yes. Yes. Yes. The movie is full of flaws.
But I noticed something unusual in the opening shot.
The Golden Gate Bridge was shown at late-day/dusk.
In a matter of 30 seconds, the sunlight faded and the car
and street lights came on. But the whole thing did *not*
look like time-lapse photograpy. I watched closely, and
it appeared as though it was the same cars moving over
the bridge.

How'd they do that?

I noticed this too. The conclusion that I've come to is that they used
a matte for the bridge/traffic and filmed that at dusk with a variable
filter. Then they added that to a speeded-up sunset.

Maybe AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER will cover it next month (this month's issue
just arrived today, and doesn't talk about JAGGED EDGE). If it does, I'll
follow up.
