[comp.lang.forth] Why no student memberships in FIG?

mburke@yoda.eecs.wsu.edu (Matthew Burke - grad student) (06/25/91)

Basically, the subject line says it all. Last year, when I was working
full time in an industrial position using Forth, I joined FIG and thought
it was worth it (it was also cheaper then).

This year, I am in grad school and don't use Forth that much and I feel
that $40 is way to much.

So, what are the pros and cons of having a student membership category?
After all, ACM, SIGFORTH, MAA, IEEE, etc. does.

BTW, to get around the money problem, I am working on writing a Forth
article to take advantage of the author recognition program. Does
anyone know precisle which periodicals qualify --- the announcement
says "in a periodical or non-Forth conference". So, for example,
does JFAR or the SIGFORTH Newsletter count?

This opinion has been heard by John Hall, the President of FIG,
from several sources.

It's all "pros" IMHO ... and I'm running for FIG Board. I feel
most of the current Board also agrees with this opinion.
