Sounds like a great entreprenurial opportunity to me! If loads of Amiga 500's die after every power surge and the "official" board swap fix costs $385, then a clever person should be able to figure out which components in the analog section die and replace just those components. You could charge $250 or even $300 and still take away all the business from the "official" repair shop. Then you could also sell surge suppressors to the victims. Mitch

The repair of an Amiga 500 wouldn't be complete without including a Forth system. Perhaps an Amiga Forth based in a ROM could be added to the repaired board to make it a really good machine.
