[comp.lang.smalltalk] PARADIGM FLAME REVISITED

jordan@titn.TITN (Jordan Bortz ) (11/04/87)

Regarding Kuhn:

Hmmm. I've heard of the book, but haven't had a chance to read it yet...
(There's all kinds of things I'd like to read....but after reading
weighty computer manuals all day at work, it's hard to get in the mood
to read for pleasure :-( )

Regarding 'Being recidivistic (my word) and not allowing language
to evolve, as a dynamic object'

Well, that may be true: for one, I really appreciated the word
'hacker' to mean what we all know it to mean....I really hated it
when the media grabbed it and turned it into their own definition:
someone who breaks into computer systems.

Where do you draw the line on that? Who gets to say who can
own the language?

On the Assumption that 'Paradigm' means 'philosophy' or 'model' or
something:

If that definition has been written into the dictionaries,
so be it.... I'll cease to flame about that meaning anymore,
but *i* won't use it that way..... But my flame was directed
more at the VOLUME of that word and it's OBFUSITY (look that up!!)
and the fact that, when simpler words would suffice, some people grab
the word paradigm, not because they would have thought of it
themselves, but because they read it somewhere......it's like every
serious C book that I've ever read (almost all, anyway), say
that 'C has a rich set of operators' to pay homage to K&R's statement.
              ^^^^^^^^

Even if used correctly, it's painful to see that word (paradigm) every
sentence. One should not be repetitive. Not only is being repetitive
extremely boring, but when keeps reading the same words over and over, in a
repetitive fashion, the repitition involved is certainly annoying.

ANYWAY::: Let's not generate anymore traffic about *THIS* posting....
but if you ARE going to use the word paradigm, PLEASE do not OVERUSE
this word, and try to substitute in other more succinct and
flavorful words.
