To my knowledge the closest thing to a public domain smalltalk is the system I distribute, called ``Little Smalltalk'' (described in a book of the same name published by Addison Wesley). Little Smalltalk is far from ST-80; users of st-80 will be surprized at what it lacks. Never the less, it is PD, and inexpensive. There are various versions available; I will describe first the versions current and future, then how to get them. 1) Version 1 is the version described in the book. It runs on Unix and ms-dos exclusively. This is a language interpreter only; no graphics, no support for mice, not event driven. 2) Version 2 was developed last summer, it is one third the size, three times faster, relies less on Unix, but is in some minor ways incompatible with version 1. It is also non-graphical. 3) Version 3 is in the works (read - this summers project). It will run under X-windows and will finally incorporate graphics. Target date is to have it limping by fall, fairly reliable by the end of the year (but then, I've made pronouncements like that before - I said publicly I would have a version using Macintosh graphics - when the Mac graphics code got larger than the rest of the LS system that project was put on hold). Now, as to availability. Version (2) was posted to comp.sources.unix not too long ago. Both versions (1) and (2) can be had by anonymous ftp from cs.orst.edu. (look in the pub/budd directory) As a last resort, I distribute 9-track mag tapes with both (1) and (2) (plus some other goodies) for a charge of $30 (covers tape and mailing). Write me for more details. All systems are PD - if you can get it from a friend, feel free to do so. --tim budd department of computer science, oregon state university, corvallis, oregon 97331 budd@cs.orst.edu btw - does anybody know of any other project involving smalltalk (of any flavor) + x windows?
